Chapter 34 - The Throne of Shadows
Jin-Ho Kang stood at the summit of the ruined citadel, gazing down upon the forsaken lands that stretched beyond the horizon. The once-thriving kingdom was now nothing more than a graveyard of shattered cities and lifeless ruins. The sky remained a perpetual shade of crimson, the very air infused with the remnants of forgotten battles. Yet, amid the devastation, the Monarch of Shadows felt nothing—no remorse, no hesitation, only purpose.
His legion of specters knelt behind him, their glowing eyes fixed upon their master, awaiting his command. The weight of the abyss pulsed beneath his skin, a power that had long since eclipsed mortality. Yet, even now, there were whispers of something greater.
"The world trembles at your name, my lord." The voice belonged to Ashborn, the first of his wraith generals. His towering form radiated an ancient power, his black armor etched with the scars of a thousand battles.
Jin-Ho turned slightly, his golden eyes glimmering in the dim light. "And yet, it is not enough."
Ashborn tilted his head. "You have conquered the lands of men. The Monarchs of Flame and Frost have fallen before you. What more remains?"
Jin-Ho's fingers curled into a fist. The shadows beneath him writhed in response. "There is still one throne left to claim."
A sudden gust of wind swept through the citadel, carrying with it the scent of something foreign—an energy that did not belong to this realm. Jin-Ho's gaze snapped toward the dark horizon. A rift had begun to tear through reality itself, unveiling a void deeper than even the abyss.
A voice, ancient and unrelenting, echoed through the rift. "Shadow Monarch... your ascension has not gone unnoticed."
From the depths of the void, a figure emerged. Cloaked in an ethereal glow, it was neither alive nor dead—an entity that existed beyond the confines of existence. The air around it crackled with divine energy, its mere presence sending ripples across the battlefield.
Jin-Ho smirked. "And who might you be?"
"The Arbiter of Balance." The entity's voice carried the weight of countless eons. "You have tipped the scales beyond repair. You were never meant to reach this point."
Jin-Ho took a step forward, unbothered by the revelation. "Meant to? Who decides that?"
The Arbiter's gaze bore into him, unreadable yet filled with an unfathomable depth. "There is a law that governs existence, a boundary even Monarchs must not cross. You stand at that boundary now. One more step... and even you will not return."
Jin-Ho exhaled, the abyss pulsating through his veins. "Then I suppose it's time to break the rules."
With a single motion, he extended his hand, and the shadows surged forth like a tidal wave, engulfing the very fabric of reality. The Arbiter did not flinch. Instead, it raised its palm, and for the first time since his ascension, Jin-Ho felt resistance.
