Xu Qigang’s eyes were tinged with a layer of anger, his gaze as cold as ice chips. “Are you in danger, or am I?”
Faced with Xu Qigang’s question, Sheng Ning paused, puzzled. What did he mean by that?
Before she could figure it out, Xu Qigang had already changed the subject, “Was it you who came looking for me last time?”
He didn’t know? Sheng Ning’s eyes widened in surprise as she nodded and said, “Yes, it was me!”
Upon hearing her confirmation, a warmth crept into Xu Qigang’s resolute eyes. “Now that you’ve found me, you can speak your mind!”
“I… I just wanted to ask where I fell short and why you disagreed,” Sheng Ning said softly, her head bowed as if murmuring to herself. She dared not look at Xu Qigang’s expression and thus missed his complex mix of emotions.
Xu Qigang’s normally unshakeable frame shuddered for the first time, something that seemed impossible for him. He could stand motionless for three hours.
Just as he was about to speak, Sheng Ning suddenly lifted her head and smiled at him, playfully saying, “Captain, I’ve thought it through, and now there’s no need to ask.”
“Return to the ranks!” Xu Qigang’s expression remained unchanged as he commanded sternly.
“Yes! Captain!” In Xu Qigang’s presence, even a newcomer would unconsciously respond with the loudest voice possible.
Their conversation had taken place unnoticed in an inconspicuous spot, and no one on the training field had been paying attention. But as Sheng Ning’s voice rang out, a bizarre silence enveloped the whole area.
After ten seconds of quiet, a thunderous greeting erupted, along with the motion of a well-coordinated team. Regardless of whether they were practicing rescue techniques or physical training, the appearance of Xu Qigang triggered everyone to rapidly fall into ranks with dazzling speed, forming the most precise formations.
“Captain, good day!” The booming voice was testament to the high esteem in which Xu Qigang was held by the War Wolf Rescue Team.
The female comrades on one side of the training field were intimidated, their faces flushing and hearts racing as they observed Xu Qigang’s tall, valiant, and resolute figure with his handsome yet very serious face.
Such a sight made the Living Yama irresistibly charming!
Sheng Ning too was stunned by this sudden shift, her gaze on Xu Qigang filled with astonishment, but even more with admiration and insecurity.
The confidence she had painstakingly built up dissipated in his presence. He was a rising General Star in the rescue world. How could someone like her be a match for him? Sheng Ning smiled bitterly to herself, secretly resolving to double her efforts.
Xu Qigang, keenly aware of the change in Sheng Ning’s eyes, stepped toward the center of the training field. As he passed by her, he spoke in a low voice, “You are my wife, you don’t have to admire me like the others do.”
His movement was swift, almost imperceptible. Yet, Sheng Ning felt his thin lips nearly brushing past her earlobe. His hot breath carried a pleasant scent of fresh grass, making her heartbeat suddenly spike to one hundred and eighty.
Wait… what did he just say? Wife?
Sheng Ning rubbed her eyes, realized she had rubbed the wrong place, and then patted her ears. Was she hallucinating?
Under watchful eyes, Sheng Ning dared not provoke him, nor did she have the courage to utter another word. But as if he had eyes on his back, Xu Qigang suddenly turned around, his serious and handsome face stating matter-of-factly, “Everyone in the War Wolf Rescue Team calls you elder sister-in-law. Is that my fault?”
