“Here!” Lu Xiaoshuang quickly ran over, “You were looking for me, Chief?”
“How’s the practice for Butterfly Lovers coming along?” Yang Wenying asked.
Hearing this, Lu Xiaoshuang scratched her head embarrassedly and admitted with a hint of shame, “I’m sorry, Chief, I’ve been too busy practicing Hope Field and haven’t worked on Butterfly Lovers at all.”
“Not even once?” Yang Wenying’s voice grew stern.
“Sheng Ning practices it often.” Lu Xiaoshuang had seen Sheng Ning practicing Butterfly Lovers more than once during her free time. Even though she had not liked Sheng Ning in the past, she couldn’t help but admire her dedication and talent now.
The dance for Hope Field is characterized by its Western elements and performative nature, which was extremely challenging for her, leaving her no energy to practice anything else. Yet Sheng Ning seemed to master it effortlessly every time, making it impossible for Lu Xiaoshuang not to acknowledge her ability.
Yang Wenying, recalling Sheng Ning’s performance of Butterfly Lovers, nodded and said icily, “You all need to practice diligently. Next month there’s a performance for the troops, and I’ll be selecting people from each group.”
“Yes!” Lu Xiaoshuang saluted, “Don’t worry, Chief, I will definitely fulfill the mission!”
A performance for the troops is a sacred duty, a fact they were made aware of upon joining the General Union. No matter how tough or tiring it may be, no one would dare to back down.
As a qualified member of the General Union, it was their responsibility to deliver stunning performances to the people on the front lines.
“Alright, get back to work! I’m leaving your dance group in your hands.”
Lu Xiaoshuang didn’t move but hesitantly said, “What about Group Leader Zheng?” She and Zheng Meilin had been rivals since their altercation in the cafeteria, and the competition between the first and second dance groups had been growing fiercer.
Representing the General Union Song and Dance Troupe in the performance was an honor. Although it would delay the practice for Hope Field, it would still cause discontent among the first group.
“This is an order, execute it!” In the Song and Dance Troupe, what Yang Wenying said was final. She enjoyed their private competitions, but she would turn on them if it interfered with their duties.

This room had floor heating and was the warmest.

The young girl smiled timidly at Sheng Ning, “Someone is looking for you, waiting outside.”
“Oh!” Sheng Ning nodded, stood up, and followed the girl, asking as they walked, “Who’s looking for me?”
Training had been intense lately, and she hadn’t seen anyone outside of the Song and Dance Troupe. She had only gone to the mailroom to send a letter and had no chance to see Xu Qigang.
With martial law in place at the year’s end, it was even hard to leave the General Union Courtyard.
The young girl’s cheeks grew redder with shyness, and she stammered, “You’ll know when you get there!”

The path to the practice room wasn’t long; just behind it was a stand of fir trees, probably a few dozen used for landscaping. From the glass window at the back of the practice room, one could vaguely see this stand of fir trees.
