Mrs. Shen stepped forward, and Su Zhongshi, with a smile, gave her all three fish, and instructed Mrs. Shen to eat the big one, “Cook the biggest one tonight and keep the other two!”
“Okay, I’ll prepare and braise the biggest one tonight,” Mrs. Shen agreed with a smile.
The biggest fish Su Zhongshi caught must have weighed about three pounds. Mrs. Shen weighed the fish in her hand, considering that besides the body of the fish, the head could be cut off to make a delicious fish head soup.
Drinking the piping hot fish head soup would induce a sweat; devouring it would cause the heat to rise from the belly, all the way to the top of the head, instantly making the whole body feel invigorated!
Mrs. Shen, carrying the fish joyfully, went to find a bucket to keep the other two in. Su Ningxiu and Su Yunjin came out from inside the house, and seeing the fish in their mother’s hands, they too were elated. Su Ningxiu’s eyes lit up, “Mom, we’re having fish tonight? Dad caught them?” The only ones who could catch fish in the family were her dad and big brother; with her big brother not at home, it must have been her dad.
“Indeed! Your dad caught them in the river, several of them!” Mrs. Shen was beaming, and Su Ningxiu, excited, stepped forward to take a closer look at the three fish in her mother’s hands. The fish were all alive and thrashing about in Mrs. Shen’s grip, almost causing her to drop them.
Last time at the Gu Family, Gu Ya also brought back some fish. Su Yunjin looked at the fish in her mother’s hands and secretly thought that these three fish were much larger than the ones Gu Ya had caught.
The two fish Gu Ya caught last time weren’t even as meaty as the smallest fish her father had caught. With the prospect of eating fish, Su Ningxiu was entirely thrilled and even called on Su Yunjin, “Little sister, come, let’s help mom make dinner.”
Thus, for that meal, Su Yunjin and Su Ningxiu both helped their mother, Mrs. Shen. Su Ningxiu started the fire, Su Yunjin washed rice and vegetables, and Mrs. Shen took charge of cooking the rice and braising the fish.
The kitchen was filled with joy as the mother and daughters busied themselves with cooking, creating a warm and cozy scene. Even Su Xiaobao, the youngest, ended up joining in to help.
Mrs. Shen expertly steamed the rice and braised the fish. The delicious fragrance of the fish spread, making Su Xiaobao drool with desire. Mrs. Shen gave Su Xiaobao a piece of fish to satisfy his craving, then patted him on the head and told him to set the table. After enjoying the braised fish, Su Xiaobao happily went to set the table as his mother had asked. Mrs. Shen filled a clean, large bowl with fish and told Su Yunjin to call Gu Ya.
“Yunjin, dinner’s about to be ready. Go call your father and son-in-law to come eat,” she said.
Gu Ya had gone back to the Gu Family and hadn’t returned yet. Mrs. Shen sent Su Yunjin to call Gu Ya, and Su Yunjin replied, “Mom, my husband has gone back!”
“Gone back?” Mrs. Shen paused in the middle of dishing out fish, looking at Su Yunjin with surprise, “Didn’t your son-in-law say he would stay with you at the Su Family for a few days? Why did he suddenly go back?”
Su Ningxiu was also puzzled, “Little sister, right, your husband said he would stay. Why did he go back?”
“Mom, Ningxiu, it’s ! The people at the Gu Family don’t know yet about my husband and me staying at the Su Family for a few days. He went back to tell everyone about it, and he will come back to the Su Family tonight,” explained Su Yunjin.
Mrs. Shen, bringing the braised fish to the table and understanding the reason, nodded repeatedly, “Yunjin, your husband has thought this through well. It is indeed something that should be communicated to your parents-in-law!”
It was better to prevent any issues with the parents-in-law when they returned.
