Gu Ya had not yet returned, and the meal was all prepared. Mrs. Shen said to wait for their son-in-law Gu Ya to come back before they would eat together. Su Yunjin thought about it and suggested, “Dad, Mom, we don’t know when my husband will be able to return, and everyone is hungry now. Having set aside the food for Gu Ya, Su Yunjin added another piece of firewood to the stove to keep the food in the pot warm a bit longer. While Su Yunjin busied herself with keeping the meal warm for Gu Ya, her parents had already arranged the dishes on the table.
With a ladle, Mrs. Shen served a bowl of fish head soup to each of them. Su Yunjin tasted it and was surprised to find that the fish head soup her mother made was quite delicious.
“Mom, the fish head soup you made is really fragrant,” Su Yunjin said, holding her bowl of soup. It was the first time since she had come to this era that she had tasted such a savory soup.
Smiling, Mrs. Shen said, “Yunjin, if you like it, Mom will make you fish head soup again tomorrow.”
As Su Xiaobao sipped the soup, he remembered to say, “Mom, I want some too.”
“Eat, everyone eat. Mom will cook another pot tomorrow.” There were still two fish in the tank, ready to cook. Although Mrs. Shen was gentle in nature, she truly doted on Su Yunjin and her siblings.
After the fish soup, Su Yunjin went on to try the braised fish her mother had cooked. As expected, she found the flavor of the braised fish delicious as well—tender on the inside with a slightly crispy and golden brown skin. It couldn’t compare to the dishes Su Yunjin had tasted in the modern world, but considering her mother had made it so tasty with just a few simple ingredients, it was pretty impressive.
Mrs. Shen was skilled in cooking, and Su Yunjin inwardly thought that she would probably be fortunate with her meals during the next few days at the Su Family home. When traveling to the Su Family home, Su Yunjin had heard from her aunt that her eldest brother was not at home. As for why her brother Su Muze wasn’t home, her aunt did not clarify.
During the day, Su Yunjin was first busy with her second sister Su Ningxiu’s affairs and then with dealing with her step-grandmother and Su Xiaofu, so she did not have the chance to inquire in detail about her elder brother’s situation. Now that she was no longer busy, Su Yunjin picked up a piece of braised fish with her chopsticks to eat and casually asked her mother, “Where’s elder brother? Why isn’t he at home?”
Suddenly, the room fell silent.
The previously cheerful atmosphere seemed to become heavy due to Su Yunjin’s question. Su Yunjin also felt the change in her parents and immediately asked, “Mom, did something happen to elder brother?”
