Her large eyes rolled around playfully, and she gave Wa Yiting a mischievously sweet smile before turning and walking away.
Wa Yiting regretted throwing the mud right after she did it, afraid Ruan Jiaojiao would come looking for trouble. Now, seeing her walk away, she felt relieved but at the same time perplexed. Then it occurred to her that Ruan Jiaojiao might be going to tattle. Thinking of her nine brothers, she went pale with fright and bolted in the other direction.
However, she didn’t get very far before tragedy struck. In her haste, the narrow, mucky paths of the field got the better of her, and, not paying attention, she stumbled and fell face-first into the field next to her.
Then something terrible happened.
All the frogs croaking in the field, the toads, the eels, started jumping all over her, swarming toward her in a wriggling mass that would scare anyone to death.
Even the adults, accustomed to these creatures from their work in the fields, jumped back, rubbing their arms and unable to approach, feeling their skin crawl!
Wa Yiting was petrified, screaming non-stop, almost at the brink of madness.
Ruan Jiaojiao, who was not too far away, looked upwards, caught sight of the scene, and snorted coldly as she flicked her little hand and took another path, going to call Ruan Jianguo for dinner. Her cat was always : if someone didn’t bother her, she’d let it go, but if they did, they shouldn’t blame her for her vengeance.
Ruan Jianguo’s fields were some distance away from the Ruan Family’s, closer to the back mountain. Before Ruan Jiaojiao left, the Ruanlin Family was actually very worried, repeatedly telling her not to run off and to come straight home after calling Jianguo.
