C38 – Twenty Percent
“Alright, the pill refinement is complete, and it’s time to open the furnace,” Miao Hujin declared, rising to his feet with a confident stroke of his beard and a smile.
His confidence in his pill-making skills was well-founded, especially since he was working on a low-level pill this time. Failure was simply not in the cards for him.
“Open the furnace!” Yun Hai, the Patriarch, bellowed as he swung open the furnace door.
Inside, pill after pill, each brimming with intricate patterns, lay at the heart of the furnace.
Yun Hai gingerly retrieved the pills one by one, cradling them in his palm for a closer inspection.
“These are Qi Gathering Pills, and not just any, but top-grade Qi Gathering Pills,” an elder gasped in awe.
Indeed, each pill bore six lines, the hallmark of top-grade quality.
The elders crowded around Yun Hai, scrutinizing the pills with great interest.
Yun Tiantian cast a brief glance at the pills before turning her face away, unimpressed. She couldn’t understand the fuss; the Spirit Gathering Pills her brother crafted were far more exquisite.

Once all the pills were extracted from the furnace, the elders couldn’t help but marvel once more:

With great care, Yun Hai transferred the pills into a Jade Bottle. Approaching Miao Hujin, he bowed deeply.
“Elder Miao, your mastery in alchemy is truly eye-opening. We were wrong to doubt you, and for that, we ask for your forgiveness.”
The elder who had previously doubted Elder Miao stepped forward with a bow of his own.
“Elder Miao, we implore you to overlook our earlier slight. We were disrespectful.”
Miao Hujin promptly assisted Yun Hai and the elder to their feet, chuckling warmly, “We’re all family now; there’s no need for such formalities!”
“Exactly! Exactly!” Yun Hai echoed, breaking into hearty laughter, “Family doesn’t keep score.”
Laughter filled the study as a collective sense of relief washed over the Yuns—their family’s crisis had been averted.
During this time, they all felt like they were gasping for air, struggling to catch their breath. But now, with a master alchemist joining their ranks, not only had their family weathered the crisis, but they were also on the brink of greatness.
Once the Yun family’s foundations were solidified, they were poised to rise as the fourth major family in Silkbarrow.
Their joy was uncontainable.
“Elder Miao, you crafted this bottle of pills; they should rightfully be returned to you,” Yun Hai offered, extending the jade bottle to Miao Hujin.
After all, Miao Hujin had personally gathered the Spiritual Plants and refined the pills. It was only fitting that the fruits of his labor belonged to him.
Miao Hujin, however, gestured dismissively and replied,
“Consider this bottle of pills a welcoming gift from me to the Yun family, now that I’ve joined.”
Upon hearing this, Yun Hai no longer insisted and accepted the bottle.
Elder Miao had made his stance clear; to refuse would be to reject his goodwill.
After a moment’s contemplation, Yun Hai addressed Miao Hujin, saying,
“Elder Miao, how about this arrangement? We’ll handle the sales of all the pills you produce. You’ll receive 80% of the profits, and we’ll take the remaining 20%.”
“That’s exactly how it should be!” the elders agreed, finding the split to be fair.
Elder Miao’s decision to join the Yun family was an honor, a gesture of respect for the family and particularly for the young master.
Moreover, the prestige of an Alchemist was unparalleled. They were merely facilitating sales, and receiving 20% of the profits was more than gratifying.
Should word get out in Silkbarrow, countless families would vie for Elder Miao’s allegiance.
Even the castellan and the top three families of Silkbarrow would eagerly compete for his favor.
They would be ecstatic with even 10% of the profits, let alone 20%.
