Gu Jiao looked at the man and said, “No need to thank me. Thank him, he drove the assassins away.”
The two visitors bowed to the man again.
After they left, the man also planned to leave. He grabbed the reins of his horse with one hand, steadied himself on the saddle with the other, and was about to mount his horse when Gu Jiao called him back.
“Aren’t you going to tend to your wound?”
A hint of wariness flickered in the man’s eyes. He swiftly drew his sword and pointed it at Gu Jiao’s throat, “Who are you? How do you know I’m injured?”
The fact that he was injured was unknown even to the servants!
Even with the sword pressed against her throat, Gu Jiao didn’t flinch. She coolly glanced at his waist and stomach. “You are bleeding.”
The man looked down to find that his clothes were indeed soaked in fresh blood, staining a large area red.
Gu Jiao warned, “Be careful of excessive blood loss.”
Given the amount of blood he had lost, any ordinary man would have fainted by now, yet he fought for such an extended period.
Gu Jiao looked around. The alley was deserted, so she put down her small backpack, took out a tiny first and kit, and told him, “Lift your clothes, let me see.”
The man asked, “What are you going to do?”
Gu Jiao responded simply, “Stop your bleeding!”
A frown appeared on the man’s face. Gu Jiao did not want to open the first aid kit in front of him, so she motioned for him to turn around back and lift his shirt.
“Are you a doctor?” the man asked.
“Yes, I am. Stop wasting time. You fought so skillfully, why do you hesitate when it comes to seeking medical assistance?” Gu Jiao realized that people here were somewhat superstitious about doctors. And of course, he might not yet trust her.
The man hesitated, but not because he distrusted Gu Jiao. It was that… Gu Jiao was a woman.
How could he undress in front of a woman?
Gu Jiao sighed. If he wasn’t going to do it, she would have to.
She moved behind the man and unfastened his armor, lifting up his top.
The man, who didn’t even have a chance to react, was speechless.
“Surgery stitches?” Gu Jiao inspected his wound, “They’re torn. It needs to be restitched.”
The man’s wound had been stitched up by a medical officer in the military camp. Few civilian doctors were experts in such surgery.
The man doubted Gu Jiao’s medical skills, but seeing her determination, he couldn’t bring himself to refuse her help.
Gu Jiao instructed, “Turn around.”
The wound extended from the man’s back to his right waist. It would be more convenient to stitch it from behind.
The man furrowed his eyebrows and turned around.
“The anesthetic is exhausted.” She still hadn’t restocked it and Gu Jiao herself didn’t understand why.
Gu Jiao closed her kit and waited. She silently repeated ‘anesthetic, anesthetic, anesthetic’ in her mind. But when she reopened the kit, it was still empty.
Gu Jiao told him, “I have to sew the wound under local anesthesia, you just have to bear with it.”
The man was taken aback, then told Gu Jiao, “I don’t need an anesthetic, just stitch it up.”
Gu Jiao didn’t explain the difference between her local anesthetic and the general anesthetic he mentioned. She carefully stitched the wound.
Throughout the process, he didn’t utter a single whimper. What a tough guy.
However, what they didn’t expect was that one of the assassins returned just as she was about to make her final stitch. The assassin now held a longbow, upon which he had nocked five arrows.
The man was unable to draw his weapon in time. He turned his body and shielded Gu Jiao, prepared to use his own body to take the arrows.
He looked into Gu Jiao’s eyes. They were calm and indifferent, flashing with a momentary murderous intent.
Gu Jiao swiftly pulled a dagger from his waist, and threw it with a swift swing, aiming for the assassin’s chest.
The assassin grunted as he fell from the roof, dropping his bow and arrows.
The man couldn’t believe what he just witnessed!
Gu Jiao calmly crouched down and continued stitching the man’s wound.
“Done.” said Gu Jiao.
The man stared blankly at Gu Jiao, still in profound shock.
Gu Jiao blinked at him, then had a sudden realization. “Oh yes, I almost forgot this!”
With that, she handed him a bottle of healing ointment she had compounded herself, “This works better than your healing ointment!”
Gu Jiao was not blindly competitive but had detected the smell of the healing ointment earlier when she was stitching his wound. After a careful evaluation of its ingredients, she was convinced that it was not as effective as her own remedy.
The man was still wearing a look of disbelief.
Hadn’t she finished yet? Gu Jiao looked at the fallen assassin not far away, “He isn’t dead, you can capture him for questioning. Or, are you planning to capture me?”
“No.” The man finally regained his composure, “You acted in self-defense, if anyone needs to be apprehended, it’s them.”
“Oh, then I’ll go.” Gu Jiao dusted off her hands, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and calmly left the alley.
