"Alright, I won’t delay your work any longer, I’m leaving now."
Although Lu Jinghan said over the phone that Han Xi wasn’t injured, Li Manman insisted on seeing her personally to be assured. Now that she saw she was indeed fine, she could leave in peace.
After Li Manman left, Han Xi went to check on patients. Halfway through, a young nurse rushed in, out of breath: "Doctor Han, a person who jumped off a building was just brought to the emergency room, the injuries are severe and surgery is urgently needed."
Han Xi closed the medical record book in her hand, frowned, and spoke: "Ask if there’s an available operating room, and get the emergency room to bring the patient up quickly."
Han Xi took the elevator to the surgery floor. By the time she changed into sterile clothing, the injured patient had already been pushed up.
Han Xi took the various check-up slips handed over by the nurse and looked at them: "Get them in quickly, prepare for surgery."
The nearly three-hour surgery finally ended, and when Han Xi came out of the operating room, she noticed the patient’s family was nowhere to be seen.
"Where are her family members? Haven’t they come?" Han Xi asked a nurse beside her.
The nurse looked around, confirmed no one was there, and then whispered to Han Xi: "I heard this woman’s husband is keeping a mistress outside and wants to divorce her. They’re fighting over child custody in court, and the lawyer says she doesn’t have a stable job, so the chances of winning the lawsuit aren’t great. Feeling hopeless, she jumped off a building."
The more Han Xi listened, the angrier she became, frowning: "Then why haven’t her maternal family members come?"
"They did; her stepmother paid the money, signed the surgery consent form, and then left." The young nurse sighed helplessly.
Han Xi turned her body to look at the woman lying on the operating table. Although she couldn’t genuinely empathize, as a fellow woman, she felt particularly sorry for her.
Indeed, human feelings are so indifferent.
"Doctor Han, we’re almost off duty. Why don’t you go back to the office and rest for a while? I’ll go to the cafeteria later and bring back your meal."
Han Xi turned around, smiled, and nodded at the young nurse: "Alright, thank you."
Back in the office, Han Xi threw herself onto the sofa. Having been tormented so much by Lu Jinghan last night, and now standing at the operating table for nearly three hours, her body indeed felt drained.
Han Xi was just about to nap on the sofa when Lu Jinghan came in with a paper bag.
"Why are you here?" Han Xi sat up from the sofa, with a faint smile at the corner of her mouth.
"Missed you and brought you lunch."
Lu Jinghan took out the insulated lunchbox from the bag and sat down beside Han Xi: "Tired?"
"Yeah, just finished a surgery."
Han Xi softly leaned against Lu Jinghan’s shoulder, inhaling the faint minty tobacco fragrance from him.
"Let me give you a massage." As his words fell, Lu Jinghan moved slightly, placing his palm on Han Xi’s shoulder, gently massaging her.
"Jing Han, I’m going out for dinner tonight with Manman and Chen Zheng, you don’t need to wait for me."
"Chen Zheng as well?"
"Yeah, I haven’t been to the hospital for so many days, and Chen Zheng has been covering my work. So this meal is basically a bribe for him."
"Then I’ll accompany you tonight."
Han Xi looked up at Lu Jinghan: "Mr. Lu, are you worried about me?"
"I’m worried about that Chen Zheng, his little intentions towards you are well-known."
