She finally sighed in relief.
“Wife!” With a magnetic and pleasant male voice, she was hugged by a man.
Xiao Yuchuan held her, seeing her hands covered in mud, he said with heartache, “Why are you hoeing? I could do that.”
As he spoke, he didn’t mind her dirty hands, his clean big hands brushed the mud off her hands.
“Third Brother is back?” She glanced at the mud on his hand, “Your hands are so clean, now they’re dirty from the mud on mine.”
“It’s okay,” he said, “I’ve already delivered two carts of dried fern. Come back for lunch, and from noon until evening, I’ll rush to deliver two more carts.”
Yishan, a tall figure, also walked into the courtyard, holding a white cloth bag in his hand, “Wife, leave the planting work to Third Brother and me.”
“You guys do your own thing, I should also do something.”
“You’ve done enough already.” Yishan loved and cherished her diligence, “We’ve bought the locks.”
He took out a lock from the cloth bag and hung it on the courtyard door, “Five keys for the gate lock, and three keys for each of the twelve locks on the other doors.”
“Okay.” She nodded, “For now, just lock the main gate, then when the furniture is all ready in the new house, we’ll lock each door.”
“As my wife decides,” said Yuchuan, kissing her cheek.
Su Qingyue glared at him, and he grinned in response.
“Fourth Brother has prepared lunch, Third Brother, let’s eat quickly, we have to deliver goods in the afternoon.” Yishan said.
“Alright.” Yuchuan pulled Su Qingyue’s hand, “Wife, let’s go have lunch.”
Upon noticing the footprints on the wall, he became furious, “Some damned animal from the village went into our new house to kick the walls! They’re not afraid of breaking their legs!”
Yishan’s expression darkened as he followed Yuchuan’s gaze, “No wonder our wife asked Fourth Brother to buy locks. It’s frustrating, we put so much effort and energy into building the new house. Yet before we even moved in, so many footprints were left on the walls.”
“It must have been done by people with jealousy issues.” Yuchuan said in anger, “If I find out who it is, I’ll break their rotten legs!”
“Well, if we don’t catch them, it’s alright. They are taking advantage of our absence. It’s just a minor issue, let’s forget it.” Su Qingyue said, and the two men let it go.
After locking the new house’s gate, the three went home for lunch.
Yishan and Yuchuan went back to the town to deliver goods.
Su Qingyue gave each family member a key to the new house’s gate, the extra key and other door locks were put away for now.
She returned to the new house’s yard, holding a hoe, loosening the soil first and then digging small holes in the ground to bury the seeds.
Since she was in the yard, the gate was left open.
A figure entered the yard. Su Qingyue was crouching to plant seeds, she looked sideways and saw Li Gui from the village, “What are you here for?”
“To see you. Is that okay?” He closed the courtyard door.
Yesterday, he had come to see the Xiao family’s new house. It was as well-built as his own house, however… it was more spacious and had more rooms.
Seeing him closing the door, Su Qingyue frowned, “Leave the gate open. Get out of the yard right now!”
