He threw the bedding onto the bed, realizing that everything had been purchased by his wife. The Xiao Family hadn’t had money to buy a new cotton quilt for over a decade, and this quilt had been bought by his wife through scrimping and saving before they sold the dried fern.
Now another woman was sleeping in this new cotton quilt, and he suddenly felt guilty towards his wife.
Seeing his considerate action, even bringing the cotton quilt with him, Li Rong’er observed his towering stature, doing her best not to look at his disfigured left face, thinking he was actually quite a good person.
Xiao Yishan had intended to take the new quilt away and use the old one from home, but seeing her approaching the bed and actively reaching out to spread the quilt, he felt embarrassed to take the bedding away.
“You should sleep earlier,” he said and walked outside the room.
Watching his tall figure receding, she initially wanted to call out to keep him, but then thought it too frivolous and decided against it.
Xiao Yishan passed by Su Qingyue’s room and saw Xiao Yuchuan standing outside, coldly saying, “Third brother, not sleeping yet?”
“I’m keeping my wife company,” his attitude was neither cold nor warm.
Xiao Yishan, displeased with his indifferent manner, asked, “Do you have a problem with me?”
“Yes,” Xiao Yuchuan didn’t deny, “Second brother, you’re always so mature and stable in handling matters, and as your younger brother, I’ve always respected you. Look at what you’ve done, bringing a woman home!”
“I’ve told you, she’s just a maid! What’s wrong with our house having one more maid?”
“If she were truly just a maid, that would be fine,” Xiao Yuchuan coldly huffed, “Even a village man wouldn’t have heard of a young Master cooking dinner for a maid or fetching her bedding. Can you truly say you have no other thoughts about her?”
Xiao Yishan knew that his wife inside the room could hear their conversation, and he replied solemnly, “No!”
“Hmph,” Xiao Yuchuan coldly slanted his lips, “Second brother, we are both clever people, don’t tell lies in front of someone who can see through them. If you really had a sense of responsibility, since you’ve brought Li Rong’er back, then don’t get entangled with your wife.”
“My heart only has my wife in it,” he said with an iron-blue complexion, “I will not give up on my wife, I will draw a clear line with Li Rong’er.”
“Talk is easier than action. Even if you are willing, that Li Rong’er might not be,” Xiao Yuchuan said coldly, “I don’t like the look of that Li Rong’er, I want to throw her out!”
“I promised her she could stay in the Xiao Family, you can’t make me break my word!”
“Do you know why I haven’t thrown her out, second brother?” He said with an icy smile, “Li Rong’er will be my second sister-in-law. For your sake, I’ve tolerated her.”
“I’ve already told you it’s not possible between her and me…”
“I won’t argue with you, just wait and see.”
“I have nothing more to say either,” Xiao Yishan thought determinedly, “My kindness towards her is merely because she helped me at the Fang Mansion, for which I am grateful. I have no other feelings for her, believe it or not, time will reveal the true heart!”
Without saying anything more, Xiao Yishan returned to his room.
Su Qingyue heard the conversation outside from inside the room, and after Xiao Yishan had left, she opened the door.
Xiao Yuchuan’s tall figure stood outside the door; in the moonlight, his complexion was fair and handsome, his black hair reflecting the pitch-black of his eyes, those deep black eyes shone like the most dazzling obsidian, his thin lips curled in a warm, heartwarming smile.
Her calm heart suddenly started pounding fiercely. Dead third brother does look very handsome.
He smirked rascally, “Wife, I thought even if I stood outside the door all night, you wouldn’t come out.”
Her voice devoid of emotion, she said, “Third brother, go to sleep.”
