Li Wangcai looked at Liu Haitang, “The Liu Family’s Haitang seems to be the same age as Dashan, twenty-five already, but she looks more like twenty-three or four.”
“Indeed, she’s pretty attractive.” Ding Er complimented and asked Li Wangcai, “Wangcai, didn’t you see the maid that Xiao Yishan brought back yesterday? How old do you think she is, and who do you find prettier, her or Liu Haitang?”
Upon hearing this, Liu Haitang felt a tightness in her heart.

She certainly didn’t want the Xiao Family to have a new servant who was even more beautiful than herself.
“That maid looks around twenty years old, quite knowledgeable and reasonable, but as for looks…” Li Wangcai noticed Liu Haitang’s anxious expression and teased, “Haitang, from the way you’re acting, it seems like you still have feelings for Dashan?”
“That’s for sure. The Liu Family has been proclaiming these past few days that they regret missing out on a good marriage opportunity and hope for another chance,” Ding Er, always one to stir the pot, joined in the conversation, “The ‘missed opportunity’ they’re talking about, if it’s not referring to Xiao Yishan, then who else could it be?”
Qian Zhang’s wife listened to these two men joking around and questioned, “Both of you have seen the Xiao Family’s maid, but you still haven’t said who’s prettier, her or Liu Haitang?”
Ding Er then told the truth, “In terms of beauty, they’re about the same. The thing is, the Xiao Family’s maid looks much younger than Liu Haitang. Any man would prefer that maid.”
Li Wangcai also said, “Exactly. Though she’s a maid, she has delicate skin and looks extremely polite. Plus, I reckon she’s never been married before, probably still a virgin. That’s not something you can compare with a woman who’s been married and had children. You better let go of any hope, Liu Family’s sister.”
Liu Haitang felt extremely embarrassed, her heart weighed down like there was a stone blocking it. She glanced at Xiao Yishan with longing eyes, hoping he would speak up for her, even if he just said he didn’t mind her past.
Xiao Yishan didn’t even spare her a glance and, after finishing one bucket, continued to fill another.
Seeing Liu Haitang’s difficult expression, Ding Er said to Xiao Yishan, “Dashan, even though Liu Haitang was sent back to the village after being divorced, there are many bachelors in our village. Some families can’t find wives, and even though she has children, there would still be interest. If you still have old feelings, you should promptly propose to her family before she’s taken by someone else.”
“Whoever wants to go, let them go. It’s impossible between her and me!” Xiao Yishan said coldly, lifting the yoke with two buckets of well water and heading home.
Liu Haitang watched his tall, strong figure growing distant, feeling not only embarrassment but also reluctance to let him go.
Li Wangcai glanced at her pale face, “Liu Family’s sister, you better find someone else to marry. After what you did to Xiao Yishan, no man would want you.”
“That’s not necessarily true,” said Ding Er ambiguously, “It might not be for marriage, but for a sleep, it’s still possible.”
“Hahaha…” Everyone laughed again.
Liu Haitang was so embarrassed she left without even carrying the water. She couldn’t very well return with an empty bucket, so she’d rather go the extra distance to another well at the edge of the village.
Aunt Zhang glanced at her retreating figure disdainfully, “She really is shameless, rotten goods, still thinking about Xiao Yishan. If it were anyone else, they’d probably be too scared to even show their face to the Xiao Family.”
Qian Zhang’s wife chimed in, “With skin that thick, wouldn’t she have married Wealthy Wan in the neighboring town? I heard that Wealthy Wan is old enough to be Haitang’s father. This woman just burrows wherever there’s money.”
Aunt Zhang snorted, “Don’t just talk about Liu Haitang; I remember you saying that Liu Haitang made a good match, preferring a wealthy Landlord over marrying into the Xiao Family when they were poor. Now it seems like you’ve changed your tune. You love money so much, why else would you keep going to Qingyue’s Family’s home to mooch off them?”
