After some thought, he added, “Second brother wouldn’t bring a woman home for no reason, so Li Rong’er must have schemed when she was at the Fang Mansion. This kind of woman is not suited to stay in the Xiao Family, but if she hadn’t used schemes, she definitely couldn’t have entered our house. Besides… if Second Brother has a fondness for her, then let it be.”
Su Qingyue praised him, “I had no idea, Third Brother, that you were so clever.” She was surprised that even Li Rong’er’s scheming had not escaped his notice.
“You shall find there are many things beyond your perception,” Xiao Yuchuan said with a smile, “To most people, I appear to be the most approachable and kindest in our house. In truth, Second Brother is much softer than I am; he is stern in manner but warm in heart.”
She wholly agreed, “You are just warm on the outside and cold inside. The very definition of a smiling tiger.”
His brows nearly furrowed into the character ‘chuan’, “Wife, is this how you should speak about your husband?”
He hurriedly picked up more vegetables for her with his chopsticks, “Wife, whatever you want to eat, I will buy later for you. Our family isn’t short on money now. Earning a small fortune through hard work outside would not compare to what Second Brother spent on a woman—twenty taels in one go. If it were the money he earned, then fine, but the money was earned by you. Of course, if it were my money, I would not let another woman spend it. My money is only for my wife to spend. Whether or that, it’s unfair to you that he acts in such a way. Despite all, our home is not short on money now. If you’re feeling upset, I will stay at home with you for a few days.”
She felt warmth in her heart upon hearing his words, yet she looked coldly at him, “Who said I’m in a bad mood?”
“Whether you’re in a good mood or not, I’ll stay at home with you,” he chuckled. Yet he knew in his heart that his wife seemed to have even given up on Fourth Brother. From her perspective, perhaps there was no longer any reason for her to stay in this house.
Though his face wore a smile, his heart bled a little.

The two finished their meal in silence, and Xiao Yuchuan washed their bowls.
Then, Su Qingyue entered one of the rooms.
Although they had separate sleeping quarters, this room was specially used as her pharmacy.
The spacious room had several medicine racks in the middle, and the various herbs she had gathered over the past months were all processed and placed there. In the corner, there were piles of dried herbs.
Along the wall was a long table, which held various bottles and jars.
Back in modern times, she had two dedicated laboratories, one for researching Western medicine filled with all sorts of high-tech equipment. Another was for studying traditional Chinese medicine, and while it had less high-tech equipment, there were medicine cabinets along several walls, complete with all kinds of herbs and testing equipment.
An excellent medical practitioner, knowledgeable in medicine, naturally understood poison.
Perhaps Su Qingyue was a bit twisted, for she enjoyed concocting her own bizarre and exotic poisons.
On the workbench, there was a small wooden cage, inside of which was a not-so-large black rat.
In modern times, white mice were used for experiments, but in ancient times, one had to catch domestic or wild rats as substitutes.
Inside the cage where the rat was kept, there was a small empty bowl. Above the bowl, there was a hollow bamboo tube going through the top of the cage, and on the upper end was a delicate little funnel.
Su Qingyue picked up a medicine jar from the table, scooped a spoonful of medicine with a ladle, and poured it into the funnel at the top of the cage. The medicine flowed down the tube and into the bowl inside the cage.
The three rats caged within immediately approached and began drinking the medicine from the bowl.
Xiao Yuchuan stood waiting just outside the door.
Because his wife had said that nobody was permitted to enter her personal pharmacy.
Thus, without her permission, no one in the house would go in.
With plenty of rooms in the house, even Xiao Qinghe had a separate pharmacy of his own.
