Huo Yanzhao smiled and nodded at Mrs. Wu, then carried his bag upstairs.
He pushed open the bedroom door and gently entered.
In a corner of the room, Yun Xuefei was sprawled across the table, working on a design drawing. Her brow was slightly furrowed, her pale lips tightly pressed together, her expression intensely serious.
A hint of pain flashed through Huo Yanzhao’s heart.
But he quickly suppressed that feeling and smilingly said, “Xuefei.”
Upon hearing his voice, she turned her head to look at him, her expression still somewhat bewildered.
Huo Yanzhao was used to her gentle yet decisive demeanor, but it was rare to see such a childish side of her that tugged at his heartstrings.
As Huo Yanzhao walked closer, he lifted the bag in his hand to show her, “Today, while at the hospital, I overheard two new nurses chatting about a newly opened dessert shop nearby that’s supposed to be very good. So, I bought your favorite chocolate lava cake. Let’s try it.”
Seeing that Yun Xuefei still seemed distracted, he couldn’t help but laugh, “Mrs. Wu has already set the table, how about we eat after dinner?”
Yun Xuefei still didn’t speak but her dark eyes finally focused.
Her profound gaze made a flicker of unease stir in Huo Yanzhao’s heart.
His eyes then fell on Yun Xuefei’s desk, only to realize that it was piled high with countless design drawings, finished and unfinished, chaotically strewn across the desktop and around her feet.
Huo Yanzhao suddenly realized something, his expression drastically changing.
He fiercely grabbed Yun Xuefei’s right hand, his voice hoarse, “Xuefei!”
It was only then that Yun Xuefei seemed to come to her senses and flashed him a brilliant smile, “You’re back.”
Huo Yanzhao, seeing the bloodshot in her eyes, exclaimed in shock and pain, “Have you… not rested at all since last night?”
Yesterday, after they had returned from the hospital, Yun Xuefei had locked herself in her room.
However, she had come out to eat both last night and this morning, so Huo Yanzhao hadn’t been too worried, thinking she just needed time to cool off. Little did he know she was exhausting herself and pushing herself to the limit!
Yun Xuefei shook her head blankly, “No, I slept when I was tired.”
Looking at the piles of design drawings, she couldn’t help but laugh, “Except for the two years I studied abroad, I’ve never worked so hard… Back then, in order to meet the deadlines, I really didn’t sleep all night long…”
“Xuefei,” Huo Yanzhao lowered his voice, a pleading tone to it, “Let’s talk.”
Yun Xuefei’s body stiffened slightly, and after a moment she started to laugh, “I know… Sun Qiuran was saved by your mother, right?”
Huo Yanzhao pursed his lips, his voice husky as he began, “I told you, I won’t let that child stay.”
“No,” Yun Xuefei gently shook her head, “We have been together so long, how could I not understand what kind of person your mother is? She is waiting, waiting for that woman to be further along, then plan an amniocentesis. If it’s your child, she definitely won’t allow you to mess around. If it’s not… then the child’s fate has nothing to do with you.”
“Xuefei, I am a doctor.” His tone carried a hint of indifference, “I have countless ways to make that child disappear.”
Yun Xuefei seemed surprised by his words, her lips trembling slightly.
“I know what you’re going to say. It’s just an embryo, it doesn’t count as a life.” Huo Yanzhao gripped her hand tightly, “And that woman is not as innocent as she appears, so I won’t feel guilty about it.”
